Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition Opens New Luxury Hotel in Mallorca, Spain

-

The highly-anticipated Son Bunyola Hotel opens its doors for the first time following a historical restoration of a 16th century Mallorcan Finca, becoming the newest luxury hotel in the Balearic Islands.

It is no secret that Richard Branson has long had a love affair with the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana running along the island of Mallorca, a vast mountain range of incredible biodiversity constituting 2 of the Balearic Islands’ treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites. His three other Virgin Limited Edition villas in Mallorca are testament enough to the group’s devotion to developing luxury travel in the region, planting the first seeds of the plan for the Soy Bunyola Hotel over 20 years ago.

With some of the highest protection levels given to historical buildings, the restoration of the then crumbling 16th century finca demanded years of meticulous planning, in-depth archaeological studies and a devoted focus on sustainability. The hotel is now finally open and set to become the latest hotspot for those seeking a piece of private island luxury in the Mediterranean.

An Intensive Update

The hotel sits on an incredible 1300-acre estate bursting with almond and olive groves and a range of citrus fruit trees along three stunning miles of Mediterranean coastline. The restoration was led by local design and architecture firm, Gras Reynés Arquitectos Studio, and now features a total of 26 new rooms and suites styled with a luxurious home decor collection from local retailer, Rialto Living. Amongst the suites are two exclusive Tower Suites offering a panoramic view of the native mountain range and sea — one of which was once a medieval defence tower dating back to the 13th century.

The restoration proudly blends contemporary design with the finca’s treasured historical elements to celebrate and bring into view its rich heritage. These intricate details can be found at every corner: from the original tiles and staircase to the ancient oil press and original altar now taking centre stage in Sa Terrassa, the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant. Along with the main restaurant is a cosy tapas bar, both with several outdoor dining terraces and jointly led by newly appointed and renowned Executive Chef, Samuel G. Galdón.

Island Relaxation

A cohesive wellness programme for guests comprises outdoor yoga sessions, dedicated hiking and biking trails around the estate, two spa rooms, a tennis court and a lap pool with sweeping views of the famous Sa Foradada rocks and surrounding countryside. New offerings include aqua bikes and pickle ball courts.

While the oldest parts of the building dates back to the 13th century, the land is thought to have been inhabited for thousands of years. The stone towers scattered across the estate date back to the Bronze Age (1300 BC) and Iron Age (850 BC) – making it the perfect history junkie’s playground.

The Son Bunyola Hotel now forms part of one of the most respected international luxury travel brands, Virgin Limited Edition. With a collection of some of the most exclusive islands and award-winning safari lodges around, Branson’s group continues to sets the bar in luxury travel in their mission to bring their unique brand of hospitality to every corner of the world.
