Artificial intelligence innovator Perplexity has debuted its new agent-based assistant for Android devices, challenging industry leaders like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Apple’s Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa. The cutting-edge tool, called Perplexity Assistant, offers users the ability to book dinner reservations, hail rides, and set reminders, among other practical tasks. Currently available in 15 languages on the Google Play Store, the launch marks a significant step for the Nvidia and Jeff Bezos-backed startup.
While Perplexity Assistant is limited to Android for now, the company expressed interest in expanding to iOS “We’d love to make it available on iOS, and if Apple gives us the right permissions, we’ll make it happen,” a company spokesperson revealed.
This launch comes in the wake of OpenAI’s introduction of Tasks, a similar productivity-focused tool exclusive to ChatGPT Team and Pro subscribers. The competition among AI-driven personal assistants is heating up, with tech giants also stepping up their game.
Apple recently enhanced Siri with and integrated ChatGPT capabilities through a partnership with OpenAI, giving iPhone users more advanced conversational options. Meanwhile, Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, has promised a revamped version of Alexa, slated for release in the “coming months.”
As the AI assistant landscape evolves, Perplexity Assistant’s Android debut sets the stage for increased innovation and competition in the space.
