Teas made from ingredients like milk thistle, mint, turmeric, dandelion, ginger, and basil are known to enhance liver detoxification and support overall body cleansing.
The liver, a vital detoxification organ, metabolizes nutrients, synthesizes proteins, stores vitamins and minerals, and produces bile for digestion.
Dr. Tran Thi Tra Phuong, a specialist in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, emphasizes the importance of liver care through a healthy lifestyle, limited alcohol intake, and a balanced diet. She notes that following herbal teas can also promote liver health.
1. Milk thistle tea
Milk thistle contains silymarin, which protects liver cells from damage and supports liver regeneration. To make milk thistle tea, crush a teaspoon of milk thistle seeds, steep in hot water for 10 minutes, strain, and drink daily to aid liver function.
2. Turmeric tea
Turmeric contains curcumin, an antioxidant that enhances bile production and supports detoxification. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder with warm water, add black pepper and lime juice to boost absorption, and drink daily as a natural tonic for liver health.
3. Dandelion root tea
Dandelion root promotes bile flow and toxin elimination, aiding liver detoxification. Boil two teaspoons of dried dandelion root in two cups of water for 15 minutes, strain, and drink daily to support liver cleansing.
4. Ginger tea
Ginger reduces liver inflammation and oxidative stress while enhancing digestion and detoxification. Grate fresh ginger, steep in hot water for 5–10 minutes, strain, add honey, and drink in the morning to protect the liver.
5. Basil tea
Basil’s strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties support liver detoxification. Boil 8–10 basil leaves for 5–7 minutes, strain, add honey or lime, and drink in the evening to help cleanse the liver.
6. Mint tea
Mint stimulates bile flow, aids digestion, and soothes liver inflammation. Steep fresh or dried mint leaves in hot water for 5 minutes, strain, and drink after meals to support liver health.
Dr. Phuong advises that those with liver conditions such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or elevated liver enzymes consult a doctor early and follow appropriate treatments. Natural extracts like S. Marianum (milk thistle) and Wasabia regulate Kupffer cell activity, enhance detoxification, and protect the liver. These extracts also aid in the prevention and improvement of liver diseases, support bile production, relieve constipation, lower liver enzyme levels, and assist in liver function recovery in cases of chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease.
